The Spring 2008 Meeting was held on Saturday, April 12th at 6 PM at the Cambridge Yacht Club.
The Spring Meeting of the comrades from upper Swandam Lane began at 6PM with a cash bar. President Art Renkwitz delivered greetings and directed the toasting ( Toasts ) as the Denizens settled in for a delightful meal and unique festivities.
A much anticipated segment to our meetings features Denizen Jim Arva did not take place due to unforseen circumstances, but will be featured at the Fall Meeting.
Here's Jim's description of his upcoming presentation:
Episode 3: Atwixt a Rock and a Hard Place
Drawing from material I pulled together -- much of it as yet unused --for a talk I gave several years ago at The Pratt, the idea is a series titled, "A Goodly Daze of Evil Knights -- Noble in Name Only", featuring members of the nobility who fall far from the mark when it comes to sterling character. Some possibilities would be:
*[1] Sir George Burnwell and His Royal Highness Albert Edward, the Prince of Wales
I started in April 2007 with, "The Beryl Coronet", fueled by an act of gross irresponsibility, followed by a theft no real English gentleman would ever consider, combined with acting the cad to its maximum malevolence, and finally, treachery to a kind and trusting old man.*[2] John Clay, in "The Red-Headed League".
[3] Count Negretto Silvius, Baron Dowson, and Lord Cantlemere, in The Adventure of the Mazarin StoneContinuing in his series of 20-minute talks -- "A Goodly Daze of Evil Knights" -- Jim Arva will present his third episode. It involves the not-so-noble nobles in, The Adventure of the Mazarin Stone, i.e., Count Negretto Silvius, Baron Dowson, and Lord Cantlemere (the latest being more a pain in the posterior rather than a malevolent). It involves 11 audio excerpts from the Carlton Hobbes/Norman Shelley BBC rendition.

There's never a dull moment when ... the game's afoot!

DURING THE autumn of 1888, a killer terrorized London. His victims were prostitutes from the East End district of Whitechapel. The name "Jack the Ripper" appeared on a number of letters mailed to the police and to various news agencies. The question of who performed the brutal killings and sexual mutilations has baffled later writers as much as it did the London Metropolitan Police in 1888. Many authors have posited theories, but no one hypothesis has been proven conclusively.
....But then, Sherlock Holmes explained for the first time the reason he was not involved in bringing "Saucy Jack" to justice. The Master revealed the Ripper's identity based on his investigations and deductions. This was a once in a lifetime experience.
