1. Click on and complete Concepts & Animations 1 thru 8

2. The presentations from the Cold Spring Harbor Lab are the best Tutorials to a fundamental understanding of DNA's history and function. Start here and move through the Concepts and Animations from 15-28 to get the foundation needed to dive into the technical details of DNA Structure and Function.

3. The Cold Spring Harbor site will complete your journey into genetics by carrying you into the application of your knowledge of DNA Structure and Function.

Concepts and Animations 29 through 41

4.   Life in the Solar System/Universe

The Planets

A University of Texas site begins your resources for the Origin of Life. A simple page with good links, it contains a small geological time scale.

CELLS:ORIGINS is a text page with chronological links that describe the basic scenario on the origin of Prokaryotic cells.

The Astrobiology Web is a world unto itself. It is on your Mars Resource page as a complete site for obvious reasons. The Exobiology and the Origin of Life page has many links, but the Origin and Evolution of Life on Earth and Elsewhere is the best.

a. The Origin of Life-Leslie Orgel

b. Notes on the Origin of Life

Prokaryotic organisms on Earth live in an incredible number of different and often harsh environments. Life in Extreme Environments will link you to current information about these life forms and their relationship to the origin of life theory.

5. Early Earth Atmosphere

6. Intimate Strangers-Bacteria and the Origin of Life

Astrobiology

1. Qualitative Lab

Identifying Unknown Substances-this is a qualitative investigation using standards. It will demonstrate how testing is done to identify unkown subatances.

How to Write a Lab Report

Peer Review Protocol

Procedures for the Qualitative Lab

Model Lab-Qualitative Determination of Unknown Substances

Model Lab-Identification of X1 and X2 Using Acetic Acid, Lugol's Reagent and Benedict's Reagent

Model Lab-Metabolic Wastes

2. Classroom demonstrations will be used to examine the properties of the biochemical molecules under investigation.

3. Work sheets will be used to teach the fundamentals of molecular genetics. This will involve learning and demonstrating the steps in the process of replication, transcription and translation of DNA.

Test #4-Molecular Genetics Lab Test

DNA Replication

Transcription

Translation

4. The Enzkin Project

The fundamentals of enzyme kinetics will be taught and a computer simulation will be used as a laboratory aid to demonstrate the components and operation of enzyme action.
