Mendelian Inheritance

Dihybrid Cross

Introduction

This BioCoach activity will help you review the basic concepts of Mendelian genetics. It consists of two main sections:

• Analyzing the Genetic X Files (analyzing genetic crosses)

• Genetic X Files Problems

The first section will guide you through the analyses for a number of genetic crosses. In each case, the modes of inheritance for the genes involved will be unknown to you.

In the second section, you can analyze and interpret genetic crosses yourself to enhance your ability to solve genetics problems on exams.

2. Do the Problem Sets on Monohybrid, Dihybrid, and Sex Linked crosses from the University of Arizona's Biology Project.

3. Complete the Morgan Tutorial. It is a multimedia tutorial that covers the basic principles of genetics, suitable for an advanced high school class or introductory college biology. Morgan is comprised of six levels. Each level presents a major topic in the field of genetics.

Morgan is a hypermedia program. Underlined words are hypertext links to frames or pages containing additional information in the form of animations, text, and graphics.

5. Here are problems to test your knowledge. We will be going over them in class, so have them ready to show that you mastered the tutorial materials.

8. The Human Chromosome Launchpad

This site is provided as a single-source launchpad to information about each human chromosome. Choose databases and other information resources by "pointing and clicking" on one of the pictured chromosomes.

Each chromosome page provides links to gene maps, sequences, associated genetic disorders, nonhuman genetic models, identified genes, research efforts and laboratories, and other information as available.

 10. Genes and Disease

From the National Center for Biotechnology Information. Click on the number of the chromosome you want to look at and then click on the genetic disease you want to learn about.

14. Genetics Practice Problems

You may type in your own answers, then check to see if you were right. If you're totally stumped, you can tell the computer to show you the answer to a particular question.

15. Blood Types Tutorial

The Human Genetics Tutorial with problem solving exercises concerning the inheritance of the ABO blood group alleles has resulted in a steady stream of inquiries to the Biology Project from mothers, grandmothers, and children inquiring about the possible blood type of the father of a given child.

1. Genetics of Organisms

Introduction

In this laboratory you will study the patterns by which physical characteristics are transmitted from generation to generation. By breeding fruit flies (Drosophila melanogaster) of unknown genetic composition and studying the traits and ratios seen in their offspring, you will determine whether a trait follows a monohybrid or dihybrid pattern of inheritance and whether it is sex-linked or autosomal. You will use statistical analysis to support your conclusions.
