The Fall 2010 Meeting was held on Saturday, October 23rd at 6 PM at Bistro Poplar.
The Fall Meeting of the comrades from upper Swandam Lane began at 6PM with a cash bar. President Art Renkwitz delivered greetings and directed the toasting ( Toasts ) as the Denizens settled in for a delightful meal and unique festivities.![]()
Alice Zalik created another pillow for the Fall meeting's raffle that was, as always, absolutely astounding! The raffle tickets were $5 each and well worth every penny for the chance to own this creative Sherlockian masterpiece. the pillow materials, including the color scheme and the tie patterns were selected because they related to things about the story. The details, as Alice first stated them, were these:
"Attached is a picture (Left) of part of the front of the "Black Peter" pillow. I thought you might add it to the invitation page as a hint of what the pillow will be. Could the color scheme be other than black and red, given the story? The one tie looks like the point of a spear to me, another sort of looks like a checker board (one is shown on the story illustration); the solid black tie has a pattern that looks like wood grain. One (unfortunately very dark blue, but you use what you have) has red dots, like drops of blood. They are silk, dacron and polyesther. The beads so far are Czech and Japanese seed beads, bugle beads, other crystal and metal beads, garnet drops, and obsidian squares. I am constructing a harpoon from a fish hook and the broken bone handle of lace bobbin and there will be other charms, buttons, etc. as I find or construct them. Oh, the pillow also will have on the back some real seal fur from a hat I bought in Norway when I was 17 years old. When the pillow is finished, I'll send final pictures to replace this one."
The pillow is finished. The pictures and comments from Alice are below: Below are pictures of the front (Left) and the back (Right)of the Black Peter pillow.

On the front, the fish hook + bone lace bobbin handle harpoon is clearly visible as is the "tin" box charm. The dark blob at the top of the pillow is the seal skin tobacco pouch made of real fur seal skin and containing real tobacco (from one cigarette contributed by a local chef) in a little plastic bag so it doesn't get all over the carpet. The front has a couple of other relevant charms as well.
A constructed notebook is on the back. All but one of the seams are beaded. The one is covered with velvet ribbon.
Cheers, Alice The Adventure of Black Peter Pillow
During the January 10, 2010 Meeting of the BSI in New York, Alice contributed a pillow for the Watson Fund. The fund raises money to help Irregulars who find the expense of the New York trip a bit daunting. The pillow was The Abbey Grange. It brought $260 at auction and was bought by Leslie Klinger whose investiture is the Abbey Grange. Pictures are below with some comments from Alice on the pillow and its construction:
"The pillow took a lot longer than I thought it would to bead and sew -- nearly 63 hours! (but who's counting?) Anyway, it looks pretty good so I hope that it will bring a good amount for the Watson fund. They might want to add to the kinds of beads - opal, because I put 6 real opal beads on the pillow since the word "opalescent" appears at least twice in the story and Australia is famous for its opals, among many other things."![]()
